The Brotherhood of the Wolf
Set in 1765 during the reign of Louis XV, a mysterious creature is laying waste to the countryside in a rural province of France, savagely killing scores of women and children. Unseen, possessed of enormous strength and a seemingly near-human intelligence, the beast has eluded capture for years. Desperate to end the growing unrest of the populace, the King sends in a renowned scientist and his Iroquois blood brother, an unconventional team whose combined methods and capabilities may finally bring the beast down. (2 hrs. 23 min.)
Mon, 25 Aug 2008 22:03:14 -0000 Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas Despite having recently presided over a very successful Halloween, Jack Skellington, aka the Pumpkin King, is bored with his job and feels that life in Halloweenland lacks meaning. Then he stumbles upon Christmastown and promptly decides to make the Yuletide his own. (1 hr. 15 min.)
Mon, 25 Aug 2008 22:03:13 -0000 Redbelt Actor Chiwetel Ejiofor follows his turn in AMERICAN GANGSTER by taking the lead role in this thoughtful fight movie from writer/director David Mamet. Ejiofor plays Mike Terry, a man who runs his own Jiu-jitsu studio in Los Angeles. Terry's business is failing, causing tension between him and his wife, Sondra (Alice Braga). But their lives change drastically when Terry is compelled to come to the aid of an actor, Chet Frank (Tim Allen), during a bar fight. Frank befriends Terry and invites him to come and work as a consultant on a movie he is shooting. Just as Terry's fortunes seem to be changing, he finds himself caught up in a deceitful plan that has been carefully hatched by Frank's devious agent (who is played by Mamet regular Joe Mantegna). With his debts piling up, Terry decides to go against all his instincts and enter the competitive fighting world, where he stands to win a huge cash prize. But the good-natured fighter is in for a shock when he gets a close-up glimpse of the corruption that runs rife throughout the sport.
REDBELT is full of the usual plot twists and fine performances that mark any Mamet movie. It's fascinating to watch the director draw on his longstanding passion for Jiu-jitsu to fill out the storyline, and Ejiofor does a convincing job as a man who draws on the discipline of the sport to stay calm during some testing times. As with many Mamet films, a series of cons are liberally sprinkled throughout the script, calling on viewers to remain alert as each strand of the storyline slowly unravels. The bulk of the movie is conversational, shying away from the action sequences that mark most fight movies, and making REDBELT an unusual and invaluable addition to the genre. (1 hr. 39 min.)
Mon, 25 Aug 2008 22:03:12 -0000 Son of Rambow Writer-director Garth Jennings and producer Nick Goldsmith, who as Hammer & Tongs have made music videos for such groups as Fatboy Slim, Supergrass, Blur, and REM, follow up their 2005 film, THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY, with the charming indie SON OF RAMBOW, a love letter to the movies. A success at such festivals as Toronto and Sundance, SON OF RAMBOW stars Bill Milner as Will Proudfoot, a shy, reserved young boy who is different from the other kids because his family is part of the Brethren, a religion that shuns the outside world, not allowing him to have friends at school or to watch television. While in the hallway in school one day because he can't watch an educational film in class, Will gets into a fight with Lee Carter (Will Poulter), a tough kid who gets into trouble all the time. Lee forces Will to help him make a homemade version of the Sylvester Stallone film FIRST BLOOD, but after watching the original, Will is captivated by the movie and writes his own sequel, casting himself as the son of Rambo (he misspells the name of the character). Will and Lee use their imagination and lots of grit to get the project off the ground, bonding as only blood brothers can. But soon the entire school wants to participate in the movie, including ultra-cool French exchange student Didier Revol (Jules Sitruk), jeopardizing the integrity of the production as well as Will and Lee's growing friendship. Milner and Poulter, both making their feature-film debuts, are engaging as the lead characters. Jennings sets SON OF RAMBOW in the 1980s, before cell phones, digital cameras, and YouTube changed the way people communicate. Amid a soundtrack that includes music from such seminal period bands as the Cure and Depeche Mode, the two young boys learn about family and friendship, jealousy and ego as their carefully controlled worlds threaten to implode. (1 hr. 35 min.)
Mon, 25 Aug 2008 22:03:11 -0000 Postal Prolific director Uwe Boll takes a break from horror films such as ALONE IN THE DARK and BLOODRAYNE for this outrageous comedy. Starring Verne Troyer and Dave Foley, POSTAL boasts boatloads of politically incorrect humor. (1 hr. 39 min.)
Mon, 25 Aug 2008 22:03:10 -0000 What Happens in Vegas Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher star as strangers who wake up a married couple after a crazy night in Las Vegas in director Tom Vaughn's (STARTER FOR 10) feature film. Joy (Diaz) is the type of woman who makes plans to make plans. She's expecting a marriage proposal, but her live-in boyfriend, Mason (Jason Sudeikis), has other ideas. When he dumps her, Joy heads to Vegas to forget her troubles with her friend Tipper (Lake Bell) and discovers her fun, spontaneous side. Unfortunately, she also wakes up with recently unemployed Jack (Kutcher) as her husband. The two quickly decide to divorce, but the plot thickens when Jack wins a $3 million slot jackpot using Joy's quarter. Since neither one of them wants to give up the cash, they each try to drive the other to file for divorce and give up the bounty. But love has a funny way of appearing when you least expect it, and in acting their worst, Joy and Jack actually bring out the best in each other.
Diaz and Kutcher have nice onscreen chemistry and make a very photogenic couple. Treat Williams stars as Jack's difficult-to-please father, while Rob Corddry is Jack's best friend, Hater. Queen Latifah and Dennis Miller appear briefly as a marriage counselor and divorce court judge, respectively. The Vegas scenes are flashy and fun--just like Sin City--and the settings for the New York City scenes differentiate nicely between Joy's organized, structured life and Jack's less serious, happy-go-lucky attitude. (1 hr. 38 min.)

Mon, 25 Aug 2008 22:03:08 -0000 How the West Was Won Hollywood's most celebrated luminaries--behind the camera as well as in front of it--combined talents to present this epic tale of the development of the American West from the 1830s through the Civil War to the end of the century, as seen through the eyes of one pioneer family. The film, divided into three chapters--"The Civil War" (directed by John Ford), "The Railroad" (directed by George Marshall), and "The River, the Plains, the Outlaws" (directed by Henry Hathaway)--tells the story of the Prescotts, a spirited group of easterners who make a declaration to migrate west. When their parents are lost in a tragic river accident, Eve (Carroll Baker) and Lilith (Debbie Reynolds) go their separate ways. Eve remains on the land that took her parents, settling down with the well-intentioned Linus Rawlings (James Stewart), while Lilith becomes a singer who is courted by the conniving Cleve Van Valen (Gregory Peck) when he learns that she has inherited a fortune in California. As time passes and the Civil War takes the life of Linus, the newest generation of Prescott offspring struggles with even greater danger and loss, in the form of fierce Indians as well as family archrivals. Top-notch production values and an endless string of solid performances have earned HOW THE WEST WAS WON the well-deserved label as one of Hollywood's most revered classics. (2 hrs. 35 min.)

Mon, 25 Aug 2008 22:03:02 -0000 The Little Mermaid - Ariel's Beginning The story of Disney's LITTLE MERMAID continues in ARIEL'S BEGINNING, a lushly drawn prequel to the 1989 animated classic. Long before Princess Ariel (Jodi Benson) found her true love on land, the young mermaid lived many musical adventures in her amazing underwater home, amid her many performing sisters and royal parents. When lovely-voiced Queen Athena (Lorelei Hill Butters) is abducted by pirates, however, King Triton (Jim Cummings), outlaws all singing, leaving his youngest daughter bereft of the two things she loves the most: her mother and her music. Not wishing to displease her father, but incapable of giving up her true passion, Ariel attends secret concerts, carefully eluding the wicked and watchful Marina Del Rey (voiced by Academy Award winner Sally Field.) Together with her friends Sebastian (Samuel E. Wright) and Flounder (Parker Goris), the young mermaid must find a way to convince her father to reverse his ban, before the heart and soul of the kingdom wither forever.
Featuring the return of original voice cast members, ARIEL'S BEGINNING offers an amazing new set of songs from Broadway composer Jeanine Tesori, and a rich score from James Dooley. This early chapter in the Little Mermaid series reveals exciting secrets about how the young princess met her best friends, and invites Ariel's six singing siblings into the story, bringing new dimensions to this beloved world under the sea.
Mon, 25 Aug 2008 22:03:01 -0000 Nude For Satan From the 'Salvation' UK video series comes this obscure seventies Italian sleaze masterpiece. Gothic in the most 'comic book' sense of the word, with plenty of sadism, perversity, and amusing dubbing, the film tells the tale of a man who seeks help for an injured woman at a remote castle, only to find it inhabited by their evil doppelgangers! Ripe with great early seventies style, with copious rewards for sleaze-loving thrill seekers...

Joining them are the girl's half-Indian son and Varner's best friend (Robert Forster). But their long journey across the desert won't be alone. Following close behind is a a man intent on stopping them--the boy's homicidal father. It's a game of cat and mouse in this Western thriller that reteams Peck with TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD director Robert Mulligan and producer Alan J. Pakula. (1 hr. 49 min.)
Mon, 25 Aug 2008 22:02:58 -0000 August Josh Hartnett (30 DAYS OF NIGHT) stars in this drama from XX/XY director Austin Chick. Mon, 25 Aug 2008 22:02:56 -0000 Delicatessen After years of working successfully in commercials and music videos, French directors Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet make a splashing feature-film debut, DELICATESSEN, a hysterical exercise in style. Scripted by comic book writer and frequent Caro and Jeunet collaborator Gilles Adrien, the story follows a sweet-natured clown, Louison (Dominique Pinon), who moves into a run down apartment building with a delicatessen on the ground floor and falls in love with the butcher's daughter, Julie Clapet (Marie-Laure Dougnac). When it turns out that Julie's father (Jean-Claude Dreyfus) is actually butchering human beings and selling the meat to the carnivorous tenants of the building, Julie must decide if she will remain loyal to her father's business or expose the truth in order to save Louison from being the next victim. Taking place entirely inside, underneath, and on the roof of the delicatessen, the film uses an old pipe that runs throughout the building as a channel of communication for its characters.
Caro and Jeunet have a flair for visual communication and comedy that overflows in DELICATESSEN, keeping viewers engaged in the film even when the style seems to swallow the plot. In one of the most mimicked scenes of the 1990s (most notably in commercials), the directors brilliantly choreograph a bizarre event in which the separate activities of each of the hotel's tenants--a couple making love in a squeaky bed, a man painting his ceiling, a woman playing the cello--become hilariously rhythmic and synchronized. This scene spawned an entirely new cinematic language, making DELICATESSEN one of the most auspicious directorial debuts of the '90s. (1 hr. 37 min.)
Mon, 25 Aug 2008 22:02:55 -0000 Many Rivers to Cross A coonskin-hat-wearing, fur-trapping frontiersmen (Robert Taylor) is set on making his fortune in the Northwest Territory. She's a beautiful woman with love in her eyes and wedding bells on her mind. Will she be successful in taming the wild trapper--and can he resist her charms? Frontier action and screwball comedy mix in this delightful take on the Western genre. (1 hr. 32 min.)
Mon, 25 Aug 2008 22:02:54 -0000 Escape From Fort Bravo William Holden stars as tough Union calvary officer Capt. Roper, who commands a POW garrison at Fort Bravo in the Arizona Territory during the Civil War. Roper, who rules his demesnes with an iron hand, is famous for never allowing a prisoner to escape, a tribute both to his obsessive professionalism and to the inhospitable landscape surrounding the fort. As a result, his own troops hate him nearly as much as the prisoners do. Adding to his problems are the vicious Mescalero Indians roaming the land that was once theirs. Roper, then, is not the most joyful of men. But when the distracting Carla Forrester (Eleanor Parker) arrives at the garrison, his mood seems to change perceptibly. While he's still narcotized by her charms, a group of prisoners decide to take advantage of his relaxed vigilance and make a break, without having factored the local Indians into the equation. Roper, even more angry than usual after realizing he's been set up, lights out after the Confederate fugitives. Holden is perfectly cast as the surly Yankee, and the desert shots of the estimable Robert Surtees are beautifully composed. (1 hr. 38 min.)
Mon, 25 Aug 2008 22:02:53 -0000 Apache Rose Singing cowboy Roy Rogers and his ever-present female counterpart Dale Evans star in APACHE ROSE. Rogers plays an oil prospector who wants to drill on a patch on land in California. A group of villains, however, use devious means to bilk the landowner out of his property. His sister Billie (Evans) investigates and finds herself in grave danger, so she teams with Rogers to get the land back and expose the villains' treachery. APACHE ROSE combines Western-style action and justice with country musical numbers as only Roy Rogers and Dale Evans could.
Mon, 25 Aug 2008 22:02:52 -0000 Imperial Venus A period costume epic with historical and sociological undertones, IMPERIAL VENUS was filmed in a grand manner meant to appeal to the French and Italian audiences who resented the innovations of the New Wave. Gina Lollobrigida stars in the role of Napoleon's beloved sister, Paolina, the sexy imperial Princess who thirsts for power of her own, and can only obtain it through her affairs with men. Not a great figure in history, Paolina Bonaparte (1780-1825) nonetheless enjoyed a reputation for her legendary beauty and her capricious life. She was celebrated in a statue that cast her as Venus, made by the great Canova (Gianni Santuccio). And she was famous by association, belonging to the family that ruled over Europe in the first decade of the 1800s. That she won as many battles in bed as her brother did on the battlefield overshadows her humanity: she was complex and fragile, enjoying a short but exceptional life. Napoleon (Raymond Pellegrin) loved his sister dearly in an untiring, if not overbearing way. While his career blossomed, she married the young general Leclerc (Massimo Girotti). She shined in the Bonaparte court, was widowed, then married Camillo Borghese (Giulio Bosetti) from whom quickly separated. Reentering France, she accepted new loves and new honors. The Princess was, in life, a representative of both the good and the evil of the First French Empire, as shown in this engaging film.

Mon, 25 Aug 2008 22:02:42 -0000 No Blood No Tears Part of the South Korean New Wave, NO BLOOD, NO TEARS is a stylish film-noir thriller that not only blends gangster crime-drama with martial-arts action, but subverts the male dominion of those genres with two tough-as-nails female protagonists. Kyeong-seon (Hye-yeong Lee) is a streetsmart taxi driver whose husband has saddled her with gambling debts to violent loan sharks. Su-ji (Do-yeon Jeon) dreams of being a pop star while dealing with the physical abuse of her ex-boxer boyfriend Dok-Bul (Jae-yeong Jeong), who now works for notorious gangster KGB (Goo Shin). When Kyeong-seon and Su-ji meet in a fateful traffic accident, the women decide to change their stalemated lives, THELMA & LOUISE-style, by stealing money from KGB's illicit dogfighting ring--a risky endeavor that forces them into bloody confrontations with an assortment of gangsters and martial-arts toughs. Often compared to violence-maestro Quentin Tarantino, director Seung-wan Ryoo distinguishes his thrilling heist-caper with shadowy cinematography, lightning-quick editing, realistic fight sequences choreographed by tae-kwon-do master Doo-hong Jung, and vicious real-life dogfighting scenes. (1 hr. 56 min.)

After Jake arranges his release from a regional jail, Clint reminds him of the money he buried in Comanche territory after one of their jobs and suggests that he turn it over to him. When this method fails, Clint kidnaps Jake's fiancée, Peggy (Patricia Owens), and leverages her to get Jake to lead a digging party to the location of the money. When they reach the burial spot, a ghost town in the middle of nowhere, they find themselves under attack by a Comanche war party. Clint momentarily forgets the stash as the small band engages in a nightlong battle to survive. This standard Western is enlivened by Widmark's snarling bad guy turn and the elegant compositions of Robert Surtees. (1 hr. 26 min.)

Mon, 25 Aug 2008 22:01:56 -0000 Cannibal Holocaust CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST was for years reviled as one of the most repugnant and morally questionable of the 1970s spate of cannibal films--and possibly the most horrifying ever. But director Ruggero Deodato embarked upon the project with the intention of criticizing the very violence he was portraying. Set in the Amazonian jungles, the film is a pseudo-documentary that follows Professor Harold Moore (Robert Kerman) into the "Green Inferno" as he searches for a documentary crew that came to the jungle the previous year to make a film about the storied cannibals that lived there, and never made it back. Now, Moore meets some natives and discovers the footage from the crew's expedition, and upon returning to New York, he watches it to find out what really happened. The truth is too horrible for words, proving that savagery is not limited to indigenous peoples, and the morally outrageous film proceeds to indict the exploitative practices of certain documentary practices. However, the extremity of the violence portrayed was enough to put Deodato in hot water with the law, and with censors who claimed it was far too realistic. The career of the promising director, who had worked under a list of Italian luminaries that included Roberto Rossellini (ROME: OPEN CITY, PAISAN, VOYAGE IN ITALY), was essentially ended with this brutal, seminal film--for which he will nonetheless always be remembered.
