Traffic Resolution for Brookswood and Powers
Modified By btsa on 7/30/2008 8:20:09 PM)

I am hoping to start a discussion on ways in which to resolve the traffic issue at Brookswood and Powers. Anyone who has attempted to get onto Brookswood off of Powers knows the dangers and frustrations that this intersection can bring during peak traffic times. There have been suggestions for a  round-a-bout or a traffic light but I am unaware of where the city stands on the issue.

Does anyone know? Are there other alternatives. What would work best. Round-a-bouts seem to be the solution elsewhere in the city can we expect one here soon?

Re: Traffic Resolution for Brookswood and Powers
I agree with your concerns and would also like to know what the plan and the timeline are for addressing the safety of the Powers/Brookswood intersection. At one time I heard that a stop light was planned for the intersection. However, I attended a SW Bend Neighborhood meeting last fall and the president of the association (Mike Lovely - very active and gets things done) said that a circle was still planned at that intersection but that the city was lacking the funds to move forward. Here are some comments I tried to post on the City's SW Bend Neighborhood web page: The speed and traffic volume on Brookswood have become a big problem. The speed limit is 35 mph, but rarely does traffic move at less than 45 - 55 mph in some sections. The volume of traffic on Brookswood has substantially increased with the new developments further south off Brookswood and since the center median was installed on the Parkway. Brookswood has now turned into the new South Parkway without the benefit of traffic control or sound barrier walls. It is nearly impossible to get safely across Brookswood at Elkhorn Estates / Powers Road during prime traffic hours. At times, I ride my bike to work and town along Brookswood and the speed of the traffic and trucks concerns me. Vehicles regularly cross over into the bike lanes because they are going too fast to remain in their designated traffic lane. In addition, cars and motorcycles race at excessive speeds down Brookswood in the middle of the night. Traffic control along the straight-away that borders Elkhorn Estates is seriously needed. A stop light would not affect traffic speed or the racing at night, but a circle would be a good deterrent. I purchased my home in Elkhorn in 2004 and was told that a circle was planned for Brookswood and Powers. I have also heard rumors of a stoplight. I do not support the idea of a stoplight at this intersection. A circle would be preferable for controlling speed, noise and traffic movement and to preserve the livability that we all moved to this part of town for.
